President Rodrigo Roa Duterte addresses the High-Level General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from the Malacañang Golf (MALAGO) Clubhouse in Malacañang Park, Manila.
The Chief Executive articulates the country’s positions on a wide range of issues that are of key importance to the Philippines, such as the global response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic; peace and security, including terrorism and geopolitical developments in the Asia Pacific; sustainable development and climate change; the rule of law; justice and human rights, including the situation of migrant workers and refugees; peacekeeping and United Nations (UN) reforms.
This is the first time that President Duterte is participating in the High-Level General Debate of the UN General Assembly, the main deliberative organ of the UN where all the 193 Member States are represented.
According to Chief of Presidential Protocol and Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs Robert Borje, President Duterte is the 12th speaker lined up in the first block of speakers on day one of the High-Level General Debate — an avenue where world leaders share their views on current events.
This is also the first time that the High-Level General Debate and other high-level meetings are done in a virtual format due to the restrictions posed by the pandemic. Discussions center on the theme, ‘The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism – confronting COVID-19 through effective multilateral action’.
The United Nations commemorates its 75th founding anniversary this year.
