What happened in ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1? If you were a late-bloomer into the ALDUB fandom, what do you know apart from YayaDUB breaking into a smile upon seeing Alden? And could it really be just spontaneous for her to smile. It’s not a far-fetched possibility that it wasn’t YayaDUB that smiled on Alden but Maine Mendoza herself. Who knows? With a month away from the ALDUB Anniversary, it’s a good idea to look back.
YayaDUB was introduced a month before the ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1 as the girl Friday of Donya Esperanza Zobeyala viuda de Explorer. The latter was then known as “Lola Nidora” from “Lola ni Dora” (Dora’s grandmother/granny) at Eat Bulaga’s segment “ EB Problem Solving”. “Lola ni Dora” was the character that replaced Dok Dora de Explorer at the same segment in an effort to revamp the segment. With the hosts constantly referring to her as “Lola ni Dora” , her name eventually evolved into “Nidora”. Hence “Lola Nidora”.
As for YayaDUB, she was the proverbial “langaw sa ibabaw ng kalabaw” (fly on top of a water buffalo or carabao). It was an idiomatic expression that referred to a person that is more arrogant or haughty than the master she serves. So prior to ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. YayaDUB’s character’s bitchy arrogance is played for laughs. Hence her scenes involving selfies. Her limitation to DUBsmash lines aggravated her addiction on social media apps.
At EB Problem Solving. Lola Nidora just makes a few side comments to problems consulted to them. They are joined by resident “dabarkads” Paolo Ballesteros and Jose Manalo. If ever YayaDUB’s comment is sought, she sticks to her DUBsmashed answers. Pouty lips, big mouth and a rubber face that rivaled Mr. Bean himself. A comic relief without actual lines until she saw Alden Richards. Looking back, ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1 lasted only a few minutes.
It all started when YayaDUB was trying to reply to Jose’s question. YayaDUB was cranky just like before. She was so cranky that her DUBsmash didn’t make sense either. Before she finished her DUBsmash clip, the camera on the other monitor showed Alden Richards, watching at her. She realized who was watching her and ended up smiling. Allan K saw that it was the conscious kind of smile. “Hala, yaya. Nako-conscious ka kay Alden.” (Oh no, nanny. You’re becoming conscious of Alden’s presence.) ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1 was that simple.
YayaDUB had to cover her face. She was caught smiling. A conduct unbecoming of someone like her. Paolo egged her further upon seeing her face behind the folding fan. “Tumatawa!” (She’s laughing!) Allan K kept on picking on YayaDUB. “Yaya, nagpapa-cute ka!” (Nanny, you’re trying to be cute!) Allan K’s comments were the main force behind ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. Otherwise, ALDUB remained as an afterthought/comic relief on Eat Bulaga.
What most new ALDUB fans today may not have realized is how Lola Nidora viewed Alden. “Ang pogi ni Alden.” (Alden looked handsome.) Allan K refused to stop. “Pinapanood kasi ni Alden. Hala! Nagpapa-cute si Yaya!” (Alden is watching her. Oh dear! Nanny is trying to look cute!) At the ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. Paolo joined Allan K on picking on YayaDUB. “Yaya, nagpapabebe ka! Si Yaya, nagpapabebe!” (Nanny, you’re trying to look cute! Nanny is trying to look cute!)
Boss Joey found YayaDUB’s smile to be out of character too. “Ngayon lang ba ngumiti yan?” (Did she smile only now?) Jose replied. “Ngayon lang tumawa yan.” (She laughed only now.) Boss Joey realized what made YayaDUB tick. “Yun lang pala.” (So that was it.) Prior to Alden’s appearance. Jose did everything to make YayaDUB smile or laugh. Nothing happened. All that Alden did is appear to YayaDUB and she smiled. ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1 provided a cute twist to the character of YayaDUB.
YayaDUB’s lip-sync clips are mostly dependent on what the in-house spinner would play. But the Chipmunks’ cover of the Black Eyed Peas’ “I’ve Got a Feeling” ended up supporting YayaDUB’s change of character at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. Enough to give the audience an idea how happy YayaDUB ended up feeling. It may not be the typical boy-meets-girl scenario. Then again, that’s the point.
Jose found this change in YayaDUB amusing. “Kumekerengkeng!” (She’s starting to flirt!) Alden waved at YayaDUB. Boss Joey called YayaDUB’s attention at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. “Kinakawayan ka ni Alden.” (Alden is waving at you.) Allan K repeated what Boss Joey said. Alden looked like he’s waiting for a reaction from YayaDUB. YayaDUB then waved back at Alden. Hence the first “pabebe wave” was seen at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1.
YayaDUB tried to react to how Jose and Boss Joey handled her change of character by DUBsmashing Nora Aunor’s winning line at the critically-acclaimed film “Himala”. “Walang himala! Ang himala ay nasa puso ng tao! Nasa puso nating lahat!” (There is no miracle! The miracle is in the heart of man! In the hearts of all of us!) Alden could only reply by blowing a kiss her way since he doesn’t have a microphone at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1.
Boss Joey looked at YayaDUB again. “Si Yaya. Maganda eh, ano?” (Nanny. She’s pretty after all, right?) Jose agreed. Boss Joey then completed his statement. “Maganda iihaw.” (She’s pretty to roast with.) Everyone laughed. Boss Joey then corrected his own statement. “Hindi. Maganda. Maganda.” (No, really. She’s pretty. She’s pretty.) Jose joined in chiding YayaDUB too. “Wet lips oh!” (She wet her lips!)
Jose tried to reply to Boss Joey’s quip at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. “May hitsura naman. May hitsura. Hindi nga lang maganda hitsura.” (She has the face. That face. It’s just that her face wasn’t pretty.) Boss Joey tried to get to know YayaDUB better. “Kelan ang birthday niyan?” (When is her birthday?) Jose was sarcastic in his answer. “Walang birthday yan, Boss Joey. Singaw lang.” (She doesn’t have a birthday. She just sprouted from the earth.)
Allan K tried to make sense of Jose’s comment. “Kumulog. Kumidlat. Umusbong.” (There was thunder. There was lightning. And she sprouted.) Lola Nidora relayed the question to YayaDUB instead. “Yaya, kelan ba ang birthday mo?” (Nanny, when is your birthday?) Jose was sarcastic again. “Pano yan magsasalita?” (How will she speak?) YayaDUB DUBsmashed some techno track. Lola Nidora interpreted it. “March 3 daw.” (She said that it’s March 3.)
Allan K found the translation rather vague. “Naintindihan ni Lola?” (Granny understood it?) Paolo relayed the comment to Lola Nidora. “Naintindihan mo yun?” (You understood that?) Jose had a different speculation. “Di ba birthday mo yun?” (Isn’t that your birthday?) Lola Nidora said no. Minutes later, it rained lightly at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1.
Jose hasn’t given up on hopes that YayaDUB will finally speak though. “Ano masasabi mo sa ulan, YayaDUB?” (What can you say about the rain?) Lola Nidora ended up commenting first. “Ang lamig. Basang basa yung likod ko.” (It’s cold. My back side was so wet.) YayaDUB stuck to her schtick at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1 though. She DUBsmashed a line from Maria Sofia Love. “Pak! Pak! Legs! Pak! Katawan! Pak! Ano pa? Pak! Aray ko! Ano yun? Dios ko!” (Look at my legs! Look at my body! Ouch! What the? My God!)
Jose put a hat on YayaDUB. “Yan! Nakatingin sa yo si Alden. Kaya kailangan naggaganyan ka. Yes.” (There! Alden is staring at you. So you need to fix yourself.) YayaDUB arranged the hat and waved again at Alden. Allan K found it cute. “Gusto ko yung kaway.” (I like the way she waved.) YayaDUB then switched to DUBsmashing JaDine’s “Bahala Na”. “Naniniwala na ako sa forever.” (I now believe in forever.)
Jose was impressed. “Ang galing galing mo, YayaDUB.” (You were great, YayaDUB.) YayaDUB threw a flying kiss towardss Alden. Alden caught it with his hand. Lola Nidora was her snobbish self when she tried to get YayaDUB’s attention. “Yaya, tapos ka na ba?” (Nanny, are you done?) YayaDUB tried to go back to her stiff-upper lipped facade. She didn’t want to piss off her employer at this point at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1.
Was it a smooth transition for YayaDUB halfway through ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1? Not really. As EB Problem Solving is preceded by the Sugod Bahay segment, there was enough time for YayaDUB to revert back to her old, bitter self. But her tears were spotted by Jose towards the end of their Sugod Bahay stint. “Ba’t ka umiiyak, YayaDUB?” (Why are you teary-eyed?)
YayaDUB wiped off the stray tear from her upper cheek. Jose insisted that YayaDUB teared up. “Hindi. Umiyak siya talaga. Walang biro.” (No. She really teared up. No kidding.) Boss Joey is starting to see YayaDUB differently. “Mukhang mabait naman siya eh.” (She looked nice after all.) Jose then started chiding YayaDUB again at ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. “Alam mo si Alden. Diyan mahilig sa babaeng umiiyak.” (You know Alden. He’s into girls that tear up.)
YayaDUB stole a moment to wave at Alden again. Jose continued. “Yung iyakin. Yung mababa ang loob.” (One who tears up. One with a humble disposition.) The latter comment was more like a snide remark to YayaDUB’s snooty image prior to ALDUB KalyeSerye Day 1. YayaDUB then faked her act of trembling while crying. Boss Joey had to remind her. “Hindi yung hagulgol. Yung iyak lang.” (Not the trembling part. Just the tears.) YayaDUB then stopped. YayaDUB repeated her DUBsmash of “Bahala Na”.
